THE CHARACTERS

THE GOOD

Ellie Parish

An aspiring journalist from the "outworld" human colonies, Ellie and her husband Daniel travel to Earth in hope of finding a career-making story amid the scattered remains of civilization. Upon entering the quarantine zone, however, their spacecraft is destroyed, killing Daniel and leaving Ellie alone and grief-stricken in the middle of a vast nowhere. There she must learn to bury her sorrow and learn what has become of the lost frontier she is fated to call home.

Robert Blueleaf

Blueleaf is the "unofficial mayor" of the ruined city Capital Three and founder of the underground society known as The Guardsmen. A self-described historical scholar, he has tasked himself and his organization with educating the willing denizens of Earth in hopes of one day building a basis for civil restoration, while simultaneously working actively to oppose the fragmented "Duumvirate" government power. Blueleaf means well, but his ego and ambition may someday blind him from achieving the true progress he seeks.

Benjamin August

Raised by poor farmers, the young and almost quixotic daydreamer Ben has left his empty life behind and struck out in search of greater purpose. What he finds is a job with the Guardsmen, his wilderness instincts and strong idealism making him the best candidate for Robert Blueleaf's foremost field agent. Having successfully arrested the criminal Elliot Muddle and located his accomplice, Wilhelm Dodd, Ben is "promoted" to the most important task of all: taking down the villainous government official known as Polemarch Aprils.

Darla Dixie

A child of the wasteland, ever-silent Darla's history is largely a mystery, though there might yet be some clue in the broken pocket-watch she carries like a precious token of some never-to-be-forgotten past. Working as a freelance scout for the Guardsmen, Darla is tasked with hauling in the criminal-scientist WIlhelm Dodd, but a personal connection to Dodd's crimes may be cause for an ulterior motive.

Molly Pullings

Robert Blueleaf's personal assistant and head of historical research at the Guardsmen library headquarters, Molly is a bright-eyed optimist who quickly befriends Ellie. Her reasons, however, may on some level be less than selfless.

Johannes Pullings

Johannes is a brilliant equipment expert who has made it his life's pursuit to understand and build upon the long-dead electrical infrastructure of Capital Three. As the chief radio officer for the Guardsmen working from his wind-powered relay station, he has become known to local communities simply under the name "Voice." Using his elaborate system of radio communication boxes, he trades guidance and direction through the city territories for water chips and other necessities.

THE BAD

Wilhelm Dodd

A self-tought "scientist," Dodd is suspected as the chief architect of a series of bizarre murders committed in his hideaway deep in the desert. A genius but also a psychopath, Dodd's as-yet unknown purpose has become his obsession and his pride.

Elliot Muddle

Incarcerated in a makeshift prison and sentenced to execution in a world without juries or due-process, Muddle is content to meet his fate with a smile. Believing himself a philosopher of sorts, he is convinced that his association to the Dodd murders is justified within the context of human growth, and very much enjoys debating the subjective nature of rights and wrongs. For a lowly criminal, Muddle seems to possess a surprising amount of understanding in the Duumvirate's secret objectives.

THE DUUMVIRATE

Polemarch Aprils

Little is known of Calvin Aprils, the face and voice of the Duumvirate for some fifty years, though he is likely the only person in direct contact with the true ruler of Earth, the ancient Arch Secretary.

The Arch Secretary

The silent partner in the two-part Duumvirate system, the Arch Secretary is the true ruler of Earth. Although his name and face are unknown to all but the most connected members of the world's scattered social fabric, his authority is rarely questioned and his power remains nearly absolute after over a century. Some believe his age implies an almost supernatural nature to his being, while others maintain that he is likely more than one person. Discovering his identity has become one of the top priorities of Robert Blueleaf and his Guardsmen.

Spotters

The "Spotters" are a small steel army of steam-powered "auto-matical" enforcement officers working in accordance with the ever-evolving Duumvirate law. The more advanced sentries are humanoid in construction, though they are rare. Their lesser, more plentiful cousins appear as floating spheres with three great eyes. As a whole, however, Spotter numbers have dwindled gradually over time as one by one their mechanical innards run down with age, but there are still a fair number patrolling the lands directly around the city of Capital Three.
